Space_Adaptors

Developing ultra-light launch adapters for secure attachment of satellites to rockets using additive manufacturing technologies.

The project aims to develop a design methodology, design and manufacture a representative launch adapter using additive manufacturing technologies.

The SPACE_Adaptors project is aimed at developing a comprehensive design and manufacturing methodology for launch adapters using numerical methods and additive technologies to minimise the adapter weight and maintain its durability and rigidity for the required boundary conditions.

The launch adapter is used as a point of connection between the rocket and the satellite launched to low Earth orbit is one of the key components of satellite launch vehicles. Because of a high cost of placing satellites into Earth’s orbit per unit weight, reduced weight components for the launch vehicle or the satellite are in high demand in the space industry. The result of the project will be a representative design of a launch adapter manufactured using additive techniques and a developed design and numerical calculation methodology for material models and structures used in the additive manufacturing.

The project is part of the LIDER XI programme. The LIDER XI programme of the National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR) supports the development of scientific staff, in particular, by financing programmes aimed at young scientists who want to develop competencies in planning, managing and supervising a research team by implementing research projects with practical applications and implementation potential.
