ROBREX Project

The goal of the project is to develop a package of technologies and a suitable architecture for manufacture of autonomous commercial and field robots including specifically rescue and exploration robots. Technologies created as part of the proposed project will be verified on robots capable of autonomous performance of tasks instructed by the operator, such as reaching a site, checking it, returning data to the operator and self-reliant performance of tasks consisting of manipulation, transportation and observation.

Rescue and exploration robots support rescue teams on the scene of a disaster. The existing designs, including those manufactured by PIAP, are remotely controlled, which reduces their range and requires constant human supervision. According to a review of the market, demand for autonomous devices will continue to grow. The goal of the project is to develop a package of technologies and a suitable architecture for manufacture of autonomous rescue and exploration robots, or, in broader meaning of the term, commercial and field robots. Technologies will be developed to enable perception of environment, navigation and control of platforms and mobile manipulators, impedance control of manipulators and grippers, smart two-handed manipulation, active feeling and use of environmental ontology shared by humans and robots. Results of the work will be demonstrated on two robots: a mobile manipulator built on the basis of the SCOUT/GRYF robot manufactured by PIAP and a two-handed manipulation robot.

Project value: PLN 4,998,512

Amount of subsidy: PLN 4,998,512

Project implementation timeframe: 01/12/2012 –  30/11/2015

Coordinator: Industrial Research Institute for Automation and Measurements PIAP

Project purposes: The goal of the project is to develop a package of technologies and a suitable architecture for manufacture of autonomous commercial and field robots, including specifically rescue and exploration robots, by the Industrial Institute for Automatics and Measurements (PIAP) in Warsaw.

Technologies created as part of the proposed project will be verified on robots capable of autonomous performance of tasks instructed by the operator, such as reaching a site, checking it, returning data to the operator and self-reliant performance of tasks consisting of manipulation, transportation and observation.

The target task of the robot will be to assist humans in rescue or exploration missions carried out in residential, commercial or public buildings and in the direct surroundings of such facilities. Search missions is an example application of the robot.
